Rescriptor or Delavirdine a synthetic non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). It is a prescription medicine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of HIV infection in adults.

Rescriptor tabs are indicated for the treatment of HIV-I infection along with with at least two other active antiretroviral agents when therapy is warranted. At the time of HIV infection, herpes reproduces in the course of the body's own cell and are released to infect other cells in the body. Rescriptor inhibits the spread of the virus and blocks the reverse transcriptase responsible for producing new copies of DNA. It is metabolised by enzymes in the liver and has the potential for interactions with a wide variety of medications.

Each rescriptor tablet contains 100 or 200 mg of delavirdine mesylate . Inactive ingredients consist of carnauba wax, colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, lactose, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose. In addition, the 100-mg tablet contains Opadry White YS-1-7000-E and the 200-mg tablet contains hypromellose and Opadry White YS-1-18202-A. So, it is advised to take in combination with other antiviral medications.

Rescriptor is a oral medication. The recommended dosage for adult is 400mg(Four 100mg pills) and taken thrice a day. It may be taken with or without food. Tablets may also be dissolved in 100ml of water immediately before administration, if the patient has problems in swallowing the pills. It is better not to use 200mg tablets as it does not well disperse in water. Rescriptor can be consumed with acidic beverage like cranberry or orange juice if the patient has the problem of achlorhydia.

The advantage of taking Rescriptor may be limited and always used with anti-HIV medicine to avoid resistance to HIV. It may cause serious life-threatening side effects like severe rashes accompanied by blisters, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, abdominal cramping, serious liver and kidney problem, changes in body fat and immune system(immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome) etc. So, inform your health care provider, if the patient is experiencing any of the above problems.

Rescriptor has many drug interactions as it reduces the activity of certain liver enzymes which breakdown many drugs and the breakdown of delavirdine is reduced by other drugs like Antacids and didanosine. However , it is required to be taken at least one hour after taking either of these kind of medicines.

Rescriptor should not be combined with few drugs like Ativan, ergot derivatives, Valium and Lovastatin as the administration with any of these agents will cause serious side effects. Clarithromycin, fluoxetine and ketoconazole increase blood concentrations of delavirdine which also cause increased side effects from delavirdine.

It is always advised to inform your physician before taking Rescriptor over other supplement or medicine. Also it can be harmful to the people having same problem if they take Rescriptor without doctor’s prescription.
